Trump Signals Limits to Musk’s Role in US Strategic Affairs Over Business Interests in China

Washington, March 21, 2025 – President Donald Trump hinted at limits to Elon Musk’s involvement in U.S. government strategic matters, citing Musk’s business interests in China as a potential conflict of interest. During an Oval Office meeting on the development of a new fighter jet, Trump addressed reports suggesting that Musk would be briefed on U.S. military strategies, particularly regarding China.

Trump, acknowledging Musk’s business dealings in China—where the billionaire operates manufacturing facilities for his Tesla vehicles—indicated that such ties could make Musk susceptible to Chinese influence. “Elon has businesses in China,” Trump remarked, “and he would be susceptible, perhaps, to that.”

While Trump praised Musk’s contributions, including his role in spearheading a program to cut government spending and enhance federal efficiency, he stressed that Musk’s involvement in military and strategic affairs would be carefully managed. Musk’s visit to the Pentagon on Friday, where he discussed reducing costs as part of the Department of Government Efficiency, was also mentioned by the president.

Despite their close relationship, with Musk having supported Trump’s campaign both rhetorically and financially, Trump clarified that Musk’s role would be limited when it comes to sensitive matters involving national security, especially regarding China—America’s main strategic rival.
