India, New Zealand Begin FTA Negotiations as Kiwi PM Visits Delhi

New Delhi, March 16, 2025 – India and New Zealand have officially launched negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at boosting bilateral trade and strengthening economic ties. The announcement came shortly after New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon arrived in New Delhi on a five-day official visit.

Unlocking New Trade Opportunities

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the FTA negotiations aim to create a “comprehensive and mutually beneficial” agreement that enhances supply chain integration and market access. Bilateral trade between India and New Zealand crossed $1 billion between April 2024 and January 2025, reflecting steady growth.

“This milestone reflects a shared vision for a stronger economic partnership, fostering resilience and prosperity,” the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

Growing Economic Ties

In 2023-24, total trade between the two nations reached $1.75 billion. New Zealand exported $0.84 billion worth of goods and services to India, while India exported $0.91 billion to New Zealand.

India mainly imports wool, iron and steel, fruits, nuts, and aluminium from New Zealand. In return, India exports pharmaceuticals, mechanical machinery, textile articles, pearls, precious stones, and metals to New Zealand.

High-Level Talks and Diplomatic Engagement

Luxon, visiting India for the first time as Prime Minister, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations. President Droupadi Murmu will also receive him. Modi will host a lunch in Luxon’s honor the same day.

Luxon will deliver the keynote address at the 10th Raisina Dialogue in Delhi on March 17 as the chief guest. He will then travel to Mumbai on March 19-20, where he will meet Indian business leaders and prominent figures from various fields.

Luxon is accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials, business leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
