High Court Closes Amritpal Singh’s Case After Lok Sabha Backs His Membership

Chandigarh – March 12, 2025 – The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh seeking permission to attend parliamentary sessions. The decision comes after the Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed that Amritpal’s membership in the House remains intact.

Court’s Decision and Lok Sabha’s Response

Amritpal Singh had approached the High Court, requesting approval to attend the ongoing Lok Sabha sessions. The Lok Sabha Secretariat informed the court that his membership was not under threat, as the parliamentary committee had already approved a 54-day leave for him.

Following this clarification, the High Court ruled that there was no need for judicial intervention, leading to the dismissal of the petition. However, the court did not grant him permission to attend the sessions directly.

Background of the Case

Amritpal Singh, who represents the Khadoor Sahib constituency, had expressed concern that his absence from the House could lead to complications regarding his membership status. His legal team argued that attending the sessions was essential to fulfilling his parliamentary duties.

The Lok Sabha’s decision to approve his leave ultimately settled the matter. “Since the membership is not in danger and leave has been granted, the petition stands resolved,” the court noted in its order.

Political Impact

The court’s decision is expected to ease political tensions surrounding Amritpal Singh’s status as an MP. His supporters have welcomed the outcome, while opposition leaders have raised questions about the broader political implications of the case.

Amritpal Singh’s legal team has stated that they are satisfied with the decision, but they may explore further options to secure direct permission for attending future sessions.
