7 Kg Heroin Seized in Amritsar, 2 Held in Major Narcotics Bust; Linked to Wider Drug Network, Says DGP Gaurav Yadav

Chandigarh/Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has busted a narcotics smuggling module, arresting two operatives and recovering 7 kg of heroin, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.
The accused have been identified as Inderjeet Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, and Ravinder Sharma from Amritsar. Police also impounded a Maruti Suzuki Brezza and a Hero Passion motorcycle allegedly used to transport the contraband.
According to Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations indicate that both accused were actively involved in ferrying heroin consignments and are suspected to be part of a larger narcotics network operating in the region.
Sharing operational details, the DGP said that Counter Intelligence teams received specific inputs about the movement of a large heroin consignment near Amritsar-Jhabal Road, close to Adda Bohru. Acting on the intelligence, police set up checkpoints and intercepted the suspects.
During the search operation, 4 kg of heroin was recovered from beneath the driver’s seat of the car driven by Inderjeet Singh, while 3 kg was recovered from Ravinder Sharma.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar. Further investigations are underway to trace forward and backward linkages, with officials indicating that more arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days.
The operation is part of the Punjab government’s ongoing campaign to curb drug trafficking in the state.
