Young Woman Stabbed to Death in Chandigarh Park; Questions Raised Over Emergency Response

Chandigarh,Gurpreet Singh :- A 23-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in a public park in Sector 36 of Chandigarh on Sunday evening, in an incident that has sparked concern over women’s safety and the timeliness of emergency response.

The victim, identified as Suhani, was allegedly attacked around 8:30 p.m. by a युवक named Vinay, who is accused of slashing her throat before fleeing the scene. According to family members, Suhani managed to call her mother moments after the assault, saying in a trembling voice that she had been stabbed and urgently needed help. Her family rushed to the park immediately after receiving the call.

Eyewitnesses alerted the police upon finding her critically injured. However, the family has alleged delays in shifting her to the hospital. They claim that although police personnel were present nearby, immediate transportation was not arranged. As an ambulance could not access the interior of the park, her father reportedly carried her outside to ensure she received medical attention. She was later taken to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Suhani was a third-year Bachelor of Arts student at Panjab University and was preparing for the civil services examination. She was also working at a private clinic in Sector 22. Her family was in the process of constructing a new house, and preparations were underway for her marriage, scheduled for June.

Police have registered a case of murder against the accused, who is said to be a native of Madhubani district in Bihar and employed at a sweet shop in Sector 35. Preliminary investigations suggest that he had known the victim for nearly a year and had allegedly been harassing her during that time.

Multiple police teams have been deployed to trace and arrest the accused. The incident has once again brought the issue of public safety and protection for women in urban spaces into sharp focus.
