Chandigarh, October 5, 2025: The fourth day of Wildlife Week celebrations at Chhatbir Zoo began on an energetic note with “Run for the Wild,” a special marathon dedicated to wildlife conservation. More than 200 participants took part in 5 km and 10 km runs to spread awareness about protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity.
The event was organized in collaboration with running groups such as National Flag Runners, Daudta Punjab, Hansali-Run, Patiala Runners, and Fit-Club. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) and Chief Wildlife Warden of Punjab, Dharminder Sharma (IFS), flagged off the run and later presented awards to the winners.

Adding to the day’s activities, a special awareness campaign was held in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana. Around 50 B.Sc. Zoology students from all three years participated, engaging with zoo visitors through banners, placards, and interactive sessions. The campaign emphasized the significance of wildlife conservation, biodiversity, and ethical treatment of animals, while also highlighting the need to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
Field Director Arun Kumar extended his gratitude to Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, Principal of Khalsa College, Dr. Monita Dhiman, Head of the Zoology Department, and Dr. Ramanpreet Kaur for their contribution to the awareness drive. He noted that such initiatives not only enhance students’ academic learning but also deepen their sense of responsibility toward wildlife protection and sustainable coexistence.
As part of the Zoo Keeper’s Talk, visitors were given an engaging session on canine behavior and ecological dynamics, focusing on hyenas, wolves, and wild dogs. Zoo Education Officer Harpal Singh shared that 2,350 visitors experienced the zoo’s vibrant natural setting today.
In a special announcement, the zoo authorities confirmed that Chhatbir Zoo will remain open on Monday, October 6, as part of the ongoing Wildlife Week celebrations.
