Why Do You Always Feel Tired, Cold, or Breathless? The Hidden Health Problem You Might Be Ignoring

National Times Bureau, September 7, 2025: Do you often feel exhausted even after resting well, struggle with cold hands and feet, or find yourself running out of breath during routine exercise? Many dismiss these as signs of stress, lack of sleep, or just seasonal changes, but sometimes the body is trying to signal something deeper.

Doctors warn that these symptoms could be linked to iron deficiency anemia, a surprisingly common yet dangerous condition. A report notes that people who avoid fortified cereals or eat them in very limited quantities may fail to meet their daily iron needs, putting them at greater risk.

The condition usually arises from a lack of iron, folate, or vitamin B12, but it may also be triggered by chronic illnesses, genetic blood disorders like thalassemia, infections, auto-immune diseases, certain medications, or even pregnancy.

One of the earliest red flags is constant fatigue. While tiredness can also result from depression, stress, or sleep problems, if it persists unusually, it could point to low iron levels. Doctors advise testing in such cases.

Another telltale sign is feeling unusually cold. Studies show iron plays an important role in proper thyroid function, which helps regulate body temperature. A deficiency can interfere with this process, making you feel chilled all the time.

Breathlessness during exercise is another overlooked warning. According to a 2023 review published in Nutrients, iron is critical for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Without enough iron, even light cardio routines may leave you gasping.

Experts stress that ignoring these signs can delay diagnosis and worsen health outcomes. If you frequently feel tired, unusually cold, or short of breath, it may be time to check your iron levels.
