‘We Have Nothing to Do With It’: Pakistan Distances Itself From Pahalgam Terror Attack

Islamabad, April 23, 2025 — A day after the horrifying terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam left 26 people dead, Pakistan issued its first official response, claiming it had “nothing to do with it.” Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif dismissed any involvement, calling the massacre a “home-grown act” and reaffirming Pakistan’s rejection of terrorism “in all its forms.”

The attack occurred on April 22 near the Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam. Among the victims were 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese tourist, while 17 others sustained injuries. The tragedy is being described as the worst civilian terror incident in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by a little-known outfit, “Kashmir Resistance,” which cited opposition to the settlement of over 85,000 non-locals in the region. Indian intelligence sources believe this group could be a proxy front for established Pakistan-based terrorist organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba or Hizbul Mujahideen.

India has since launched a massive search operation in the Baisaran area of Anantnag, and security has been intensified across Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia at the time, returned to New Delhi ahead of schedule to chair a high-level meeting on national security.

Despite Pakistan’s denial, tensions between the two nations have escalated. Indian leaders and security experts remain skeptical of Islamabad’s disavowal, pointing to a history of cross-border terrorism and proxy warfare.

As the investigation continues, global condemnation of the attack pours in, and the demand for accountability grows stronger.
