“We Can Win Anywhere”: Captain Shubman Gill Sets Confident Tone Ahead of England Test Series

Leeds, June 19, 2025 — India’s Test cricket captain Shubman Gill has firmly stated that the team is ready to dominate anywhere in the world, setting a strong tone ahead of the five-match Test series against England. As India begins its new World Test Championship cycle, Gill’s leadership is being closely watched—especially as he steps into the shoes of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“We believe we can win anywhere. That’s the blueprint we are following,” said Gill at the pre-match press conference in Leeds. The 25-year-old opener, now positioned at number four in the batting order, highlighted the importance of creating a secure and positive team environment to ensure consistent performance.

India’s young squad, missing veterans such as Kohli, Sharma, and Ashwin, is aiming for its first Test series win in England since 2007. Despite the inexperience, Gill is optimistic. He emphasised that playing with a fresh mindset and no emotional baggage from past defeats could work in India’s favour.

Ben Stokes, England’s captain, acknowledged India’s strength, particularly in their bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, saying the visitors will pose a strong challenge even in English conditions.

Former coach Ravi Shastri advised patience for Gill, calling his transition into captaincy a long-term journey. Meanwhile, Australia’s Jos Buttler praised Gill’s leadership style, describing it as a balance between “Kohli’s fire and Rohit’s ice.”

India’s opening Test begins in Leeds on June 20. A win would not only set the tone for the series but also break a long-standing drought India hasn’t won an opening Test in England since 1986.
