Wanted Shooter Killed in Late-Night Amritsar Encounter; Police Probe Cross-Border Angle

Preparations underway for the cremation of ASI Sandeep

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): A late-night police operation on Wednesday ended with the death of an alleged gangster believed to have ties to criminal syndicates abroad and operatives across the Pakistan border. The man, identified as Harjinder Singh alias “Harry,” was fatally shot after a confrontation with an anti-gangster unit on the city’s outskirts.

According to Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, officers had received intelligence that Harry and an associate were preparing to carry out a contract killing in Amritsar. A team deployed to intercept them came under fire, prompting police to retaliate. Harry was hit during the exchange and died at the scene.

His accomplice, Sunny of Attari, fled into nearby fields under cover of darkness and remains untraceable. Search teams have since been deployed to track him down.

From the encounter site, officers recovered two high-end pistols believed to have been smuggled from Pakistan — including a 9mm Glock — along with a .30-bore weapon, a motorcycle and a mobile phone. Police say the weapons will undergo ballistic testing to link them to past crimes.

Harry, who had recently secured bail, was already under the scanner for his suspected coordination with foreign-based gangsters. Bhullar said the investigation now focuses on mapping his communication and funding channels to determine the extent of external support.

Raids continued through Thursday as police widened their search for the absconding accused and sought to uncover the larger network behind the planned hit.
