Chandigarh, November 27, 2025: The Vice-President of India, serving as Chancellor of Panjab University, has formally approved the schedule for Senate elections — clearing the path for a full restoration of the university’s governance structure. After months of student protests and institutional uncertainty, this approval heralds the reinstatement of the university’s top decision-making body.
Under the approved plan, ordinary fellows for the new four-year Senate term will be elected from multiple constituencies: registered graduates, university professors and associate/assistant professors, principals and staff of technical and professional colleges, heads and teachers of affiliated arts colleges, and a set of faculty representatives.
The election schedule indicates that voting will take place between September 7 and October 4, 2026, spread across different categories — technical-college staff, university teaching faculty, affiliated arts colleges, registered graduates, and various faculties.
In a letter issued from the Vice-President’s Secretariat to PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig, the Chancellor approved the detailed election timetable forwarded by the university administration. With the green light given, Panjab University can now proceed with formal preparations for polling — bringing an end to months of administrative limbo.
