Virat Kohli Breaks Azharuddin’s Record for Most Catches in ODIs

Dubai, February 23, 2025 – Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli has etched his name in history yet again, becoming the Indian fielder with the most catches in ODI cricket. He surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin’s tally of 156 during India’s Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan in Dubai.

Kohli’s Record-Breaking Moment

The historic milestone came in the 47th over when Kohli took a sharp low catch to dismiss Naseem Shah off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling. That catch marked his 157th in ODIs, moving him past Azharuddin. He wasn’t done yet—just a few overs later, he took another clean catch at deep mid-wicket off Harshit Rana’s delivery, pushing his tally to 158.

Most Catches by an Indian Fielder in ODIs:

1. Virat Kohli – 158 catches
2. Mohammad Azharuddin – 156 catches
3. Sachin Tendulkar – 140 catches
4. Rahul Dravid – 124 catches
5. Suresh Raina – 102 catches

On the global stage, Kohli now stands third in all-time outfield catches in ODIs, trailing only Mahela Jayawardene (218) and Ricky Ponting (160).

India’s Dominant Fielding Restricts Pakistan to 241

Kohli’s brilliance in the field was part of an overall clinical Indian performance, which kept Pakistan to a modest total of 241. Despite a 104-run partnership between Saud Shakeel (62) and Mohammad Rizwan (46), Pakistan struggled to gain momentum. Khushdil Shah’s late 38 provided some resistance, but India’s bowlers and fielders ensured a controlled finish.

With a manageable target ahead, the Indian team will now look to capitalize on its momentum and chase down 242 to strengthen its Champions Trophy campaign.
