Violent Altercation Inside Edmonton ER Sparks Safety Concerns, Probe Underway

News Alert

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): A violent incident inside the emergency department of Royal Alexandra Hospital has raised fresh concerns over patient safety after one individual allegedly attacked another on Friday evening.

According to police, officers already present at the hospital intervened around 6:15 p.m. after noticing two men engaged in a physical confrontation. A 42-year-old patient sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was immediately treated at the facility.

Authorities said the suspected attacker was found carrying three edged weapons and has since been taken into custody. He is now facing multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and breach of probation conditions. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Alberta’s Hospitals Minister Matt Jones described the episode as “deeply unsettling,” praising hospital staff and police for their swift response, which helped contain the situation and prevent further harm.

Opposition voices also reacted strongly, with Sarah Hoffman stating that dozens of people—including patients and healthcare workers—witnessed the incident, calling for urgent improvements in hospital security measures.

Officials confirmed that steps are already being taken to strengthen safety protocols at the site. Plans include increasing on-site security personnel and introducing a weapons screening system as part of broader efforts led by Alberta Health Services.

Authorities have reiterated that hospitals must remain safe spaces for patients and staff alike, as concerns grow over rising incidents of violence in healthcare settings.
