Vice Presidential Election Announced: Polling Scheduled for September 9

New Delhi, Aug 1, 2025 — The Election Commission on Friday announced the schedule for the election to the post of Vice President of India, marking the beginning of the race for the nation’s second-highest constitutional office. The process formally begins with the notification of the election on August 7.

According to the schedule, nomination papers can be filed until August 21, with scrutiny taking place on August 22. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw nominations by August 25. If the contest sees more than one candidate, polling will be conducted on September 9, with the results declared the same day.

The announcement sets the stage for intense political maneuvering, with both ruling and opposition blocs preparing for what is expected to be a closely watched contest. The Opposition INDIA bloc has already confirmed its intention to field a joint candidate. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA is yet to begin formal discussions with its allies, though party sources indicated talks would begin next week.

The election has been necessitated following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Dhankhar, who took oath as the 14th Vice President on August 11, 2022, and also served as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, had earlier succeeded M. Venkaiah Naidu.

As per the Constitution, the newly elected Vice President will serve a full five-year term from the date of assuming office.
