Vice President to Receive Enhanced Security, CRPF Commandos to Provide ‘Z+’ Cover

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is set to take over the personal security of the Vice President of India, who will now be safeguarded under the ‘Z+’ security category. The arrangement follows fresh inputs from the Intelligence Bureau and subsequent directions issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

As per officials aware of the matter, while Delhi Police will continue to manage the outer perimeter and regulate entry points, the CRPF’s elite protection unit will be tasked with providing close-quarter security. The handover could take place as soon as Wednesday, sources indicated.

‘Z+’ protection is one of the most stringent security layers in the country, involving the deployment of over 55 armed commandos, in addition to vehicles and support staff. Personnel detailed for such duties undergo specialized training in counter-terror responses, evacuation protocols, and close combat scenarios.

The decision to shift responsibility from the local police to the CRPF comes after a detailed threat reassessment, officials said. The new framework is also being aligned with the updated Blue Book, the official guide that dictates security procedures for senior constitutional authorities.

With this transition, the Vice President will join the list of dignitaries already under the CRPF’s high-security cover, reflecting the Centre’s efforts to tighten protection for top leaders against emerging threats.
