Vancouver MP Jenny Kwan Demands Canada Cut Intelligence Ties with India, Labels Nijjar Killing a Sovereignty Crisis

Vancouver (National Times): NDP Member of Parliament Jenny Kwan has issued a direct challenge to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging his government to sever all security and intelligence cooperation with India amid explosive allegations of transnational repression.

In an open letter published Tuesday, Kwan referred to recent findings by the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) which reinforce suspicions that Indian officials were involved in the targeted killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Kwan also criticized the government’s decision to welcome Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet members to the G7 Summit in Canada.

“India’s actions go beyond diplomacy—they are a threat to our national sovereignty,” Kwan wrote, adding that Canada must no longer allow its institutions to be “used as tools of repression by foreign governments.”

Kwan’s recommendations include a public inquiry into India’s alleged interference, formal designation of the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization, and a suspension of all intelligence collaboration that could endanger dissidents in Canada.

She also called for Canada to implement a long-awaited Foreign Agent Registry and to publicly pressure India to cooperate in investigations into extra-judicial killings and foreign intimidation.

Her letter concludes with a powerful reminder: “Canada must always defend the rights and safety of those who call Canada home.”

Kwan’s statement is expected to intensify scrutiny on Canada’s foreign policy towards India and add fuel to ongoing political debate about safeguarding the country’s democratic integrity and minority communities.
