Jammu (Rajeev Sharma): The resumption of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, which was slated to begin today after nearly three weeks of suspension, has been delayed once again due to continuous heavy rainfall in the Jammu region. Officials confirmed that the yatra will remain suspended until further notice.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board had earlier announced plans to restart the pilgrimage on September 14, after halting it on August 26. The original suspension came just hours before a deadly landslide struck the route leading to the holy shrine, resulting in 34 fatalities and injuring 20 others.
In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Shrine Board announced:
“Due to incessant rain at Bhawan and the track, commencement of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra scheduled from September 14 stands postponed till further order. Devotees are requested to stay updated through official communication channels.”
Pilgrim Safety Takes Priority
Officials have cited ongoing landslides and slippery conditions along the mountainous path to the shrine as major concerns. These hazards have made travel dangerous for pilgrims and prompted authorities to postpone the yatra in the interest of public safety.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a critical route for pilgrims, also remains affected at multiple stretches due to landslides and road damage, further complicating access to the shrine located in Trikuta Hills.
Preparations Underway for Upcoming Navratras
With the Shardiya Navratras scheduled to begin from September 22, the Shrine Board is preparing for a potential surge in devotees during the nine-day festival period. In anticipation, the board has announced the reintroduction of wireless communication systems along the track to strengthen emergency response and coordination.
“The board is expecting a large number of visitors during Navratras, and all departments are working together to ensure a smooth and safe experience for pilgrims,” said the Shrine Board’s CEO.
