Dehradun, October 2: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Rampur Tiraha memorial to pay homage to the martyrs of the Uttarakhand movement, Mahatma Gandhi, and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Speaking at the event, Dhami highlighted that the state government has taken strict measures to preserve Uttarakhand’s culture, including actions against land jihad, love jihad, and spit jihad. He expressed hope that the culprits of the Rampur Tiraha incident will be brought to justice. Former Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan had reportedly intervened in court proceedings following Dhami’s request.
“The Rampur Tiraha incident is a dark chapter in Uttarakhand and India’s history. It occurred during the Samajwadi Party government and was a brutal suppression of a peaceful movement,” the CM said, adding that the brutality surpassed even the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a view recognized by the courts.
Dhami further stated that the government has demolished illegal mazars and mosques to protect local culture, compensated damages caused by rioters, and initiated the closure of madrasas. Currently, around 250 madrasas have been shut down, and from July 1, 2026, only those following school curricula will be allowed to operate. “Justice for the martyrs of the Uttarakhand movement and their families will remain our priority until it is fully delivered,” he said.
CM Announces Redevelopment Plans
Dhami announced a redevelopment plan for the Rampur martyrdom site, including the construction of a grand canteen. A bus stop will also be established at Rampur Tiraha for Uttarakhand state buses, improving facilities for visitors and pilgrims.
