US Urges India to Swap Russian Crude for American Energy Amid Middle East Volatility

New Delhi/Washington (Rajeev Sharma) — United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau issued a strong appeal to India on Thursday, urging the nation to transition from Russian crude oil to American energy supplies. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2026, Landau positioned the United States as the “best alternative” for meeting India’s massive energy requirements, particularly as the escalating conflict in West Asia threatens traditional supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The diplomat’s remarks come at a critical juncture for global markets. Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, India has consistently purchased discounted Russian oil, a move that has drawn persistent scrutiny from Washington. However, with the current instability involving Iran and the potential for major disruptions in the Middle East, Landau suggested that diversification is now a strategic necessity for New Delhi. He highlighted America’s status as a leading global energy producer capable of providing the reliability India requires for its long-term economic growth and national security.

Landau also used the forum to clarify Washington’s stance on the ongoing confrontation with Tehran. He emphasised that the United States has a firm “red line” regarding Iran’s development of nuclear weapons, warning that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an unacceptable risk to international stability. While he noted that the political future of Iran ultimately rests with its own citizens, he expressed hope that partners like India would collaborate to foster a “new normal” and help the region transition toward a more stable environment.

Beyond energy and security, the Deputy Secretary of State offered an optimistic outlook on bilateral economic ties. He revealed that negotiations for a highly anticipated India-US trade agreement are “close to the finish line.” This pact is expected to unlock substantial commercial opportunities and solidify the strategic partnership between the two nations. Landau concluded by acknowledging India’s trajectory as a rising global power in the 21st century, reaffirming the American commitment to deepening cooperation across both economic and security domains in an increasingly unpredictable global landscape.
