Washington/Caracas/New York (Rajeev Sharma): The United States has made public a video showing detained Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro being escorted in handcuffs by federal agents, a move that has amplified global attention on the dramatic turn of events following his capture. The footage, released by US authorities, shows Maduro under tight security as he is taken into custody, marking the first visual confirmation of his detention.
American officials confirmed that Maduro is expected to be moved to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in New York, a federal facility known for severe conditions and long-standing criticism over safety, staffing shortages, and infrastructure failures. The jail has previously housed a number of well-known inmates from the worlds of entertainment, finance, and organised crime.

In Washington, President Donald Trump distanced his administration from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, indicating she may not play a central role in shaping the country’s next government. Speaking to reporters, Trump said he had not consulted Machado and questioned whether she commanded sufficient authority within Venezuela to lead a transition.
Machado has pushed for Edmundo González Urrutia to be immediately recognised as president, citing international assessments that he won the disputed 2024 election. Several Western governments have echoed that view, though Washington has stopped short of committing to a clear successor.
Inside Venezuela, the Supreme Court issued an order naming Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president, arguing that Maduro was temporarily unable to discharge his constitutional responsibilities. Rodríguez, a close ally of the former leader, now holds executive authority as the country navigates a volatile moment.
