Tehran (International News Desk): In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Iran has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with the United States, pausing ongoing military operations and allowing safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The development follows a peace initiative led by US President Donald Trump, who announced the suspension of American military actions against Iran after accepting a 10-point proposal from Tehran as the basis for further negotiations.
Confirming the move, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran would halt its defensive military operations provided no further attacks are carried out against the country. He also announced that safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured for two weeks in coordination with Iranian armed forces.
Araghchi acknowledged the mediation efforts of Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir, for facilitating dialogue and de-escalation in the region.
Earlier, Trump said the ceasefire decision was taken after discussions with Pakistani leaders, adding that the United States had achieved most of its military objectives. He described Iran’s proposal as “workable” and indicated that the pause would allow both sides to negotiate a long-term peace agreement.
The US President also noted that Iran had agreed to key points of contention, and the temporary truce would provide time to finalise a comprehensive deal aimed at ensuring lasting peace in the Middle East.
The conflict, which escalated in late March, had raised global concerns over regional stability and energy security. With both nations now agreeing to a pause in hostilities, diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify, including the possibility of a peace summit in Islamabad.
Observers say the ceasefire has raised hopes of a permanent resolution to tensions in West Asia, as negotiations move forward during the two-week window.
