US Approves USD 686 Million Upgrade Package for Pakistan’s F-16 Fleet

Washington DC, December 11, 2025: The United States has approved the sale of advanced equipment and support services worth USD 686 million to upgrade Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, according to a letter sent to Congress by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), as reported by Dawn.

The package includes Link-16 data systems, upgraded avionics, cryptographic equipment, training modules and broad logistical support. The DSCA stated that the sale aligns with Washington’s foreign policy and national security priorities, ensuring Pakistan remains interoperable with US and allied forces in counterterrorism operations and future contingency missions.

According to the agency, the upgrades will modernise Pakistan’s existing F-16 fleet — particularly the Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade variants — while addressing critical flight safety issues. The improvements aim to enhance operational readiness and extend the jets’ service life through 2040. The DSCA said the modernisation will also improve coordination between the Pakistan Air Force and the US Air Force during joint drills, combat missions and training programs.

The agency expressed confidence in Pakistan’s ability to handle and maintain the upgraded systems, noting that Islamabad has consistently demonstrated competence in managing advanced defence platforms. It also clarified that the sale will not alter the military balance in the region.

Of the total USD 686 million package, USD 37 million accounts for major defence hardware, while USD 649 million is dedicated to support services and associated equipment. The DSCA emphasised that the upgrade package supports US strategic interests by ensuring Pakistan can continue safely and effectively operating its F-16 fleet in alignment with shared security objectives.
