Unseasonably Mild Temperatures Force Temporary Closure of Edmonton’s Ice Castles

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Edmonton’s popular winter attraction, Ice Castles, has been forced to shut its doors temporarily as an unexpected spell of warm weather settles over the city.

The attraction, located in Fan Park, had only been open for about two weeks after launching during extreme cold conditions. However, organizers announced through social media that operations will be suspended starting Saturday and are expected to resume the following Friday, weather permitting.

Visitors who purchased tickets for dates during the closure will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer their tickets to a later visit. Organizers expressed regret over the disruption, noting that current weather conditions make it difficult to maintain a safe and enjoyable experience.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” the statement read, adding that warmer temperatures compromise the structural integrity of the ice formations and guest safety remains the top priority.

Edmonton’s weather has fluctuated dramatically in recent weeks. While temperatures plunged to around –30°C in mid-December, the city is now experiencing daytime highs reaching 4°C, with forecasts predicting temperatures climbing as high as 6°C in the coming days.

Officials say they will continue monitoring conditions closely and provide updates once colder weather returns, allowing the ice structures to be safely maintained.
