National Times Bureau :- In a late-night operation on Tuesday, Amritsar Police arrested two terror suspects and recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) from the Indo-Pakistan border region. The search for additional suspects is underway, while officials have avoided detailed comments as the operation was still in progress at the time of reporting.
Police had received inputs suggesting that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, had resumed sending explosives to India following the recent Delhi blasts. Acting on the alert, security was tightened along the border, and patrolling was significantly increased.
According to sources, two suspected terrorists left their homes on a motorcycle late Tuesday to collect an IED. Following this information, police set up checkpoints across Ramdas, Ajnala, and Gharinda areas.
During the intensified checking, officers spotted two men on a motorcycle moving under suspicious circumstances in heavy fog. When signalled to stop, the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief chase.
A search of the motorcycle led to the recovery of an IED weighing between 1.5 kg and 2.5 kg.
DIG Sandeep Goel and SSP Suhail Mir are expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday morning to share more details. Sources indicate that the number of arrests in the case may rise to four by Wednesday.
It is worth noting that security forces have previously recovered grenades, IEDs, explosives, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and hundreds of pistols from the Indo-Pak border region in recent months.
