Edmonton/Chandigarh (Rajeev Sharma): Tragedy struck two young men from Punjab when they were fatally shot in Edmonton, Canada, leaving their families devastated and searching for answers. The incident occurred early Friday, and authorities have not yet established a clear motive.
The victims, Gurdeep Singh (27) from Barre village and Ranvir Singh (19) of Uddat Saidewala village in Mansa district, were attacked shortly after leaving a friend’s birthday celebration. According to family accounts, the two had just entered a car when another vehicle arrived, and the assailants opened fire before fleeing the scene. Ranvir, seated in the driver’s seat, was directly hit, while Gurdeep, sitting beside him, was struck by shrapnel. Other passengers in the car escaped unharmed.
Ranvir’s uncle, Mandeep Singh, described the victims as law-abiding and without any known enemies. “Ranvir had no conflicts, not even minor disagreements. We suspect this might have been a case of mistaken identity,” he said, noting that the car the young men were in was not theirs.
Gurdeep had been living in Canada for over two years, awaiting a work permit, while Ranvir had moved there roughly a year and a half ago for higher education. Ranvir, the only child of his family, was known for his academic dedication and had plans to continue his studies and career abroad, supported by relatives already settled in Canada.
The incident has left the families in Punjab in shock, grappling with the sudden loss. Canadian authorities are investigating the shooting, but no arrests have been reported yet. Meanwhile, the families are calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the reasons behind the senseless attack.
