Durgapur, West Bengal, October 13, 2025 — Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student in Durgapur, bringing the total number of accused to five. The arrests were confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhisekh Gupta of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate.
According to officials, all five suspects were apprehended based on the survivor’s complaint. The incident took place on Friday night when the second-year student of a private medical college stepped out with a male friend for dinner. The survivor, who hails from Jaleswar in Odisha’s Balasore district, was reportedly surrounded by three men who initially assaulted her before two more joined and allegedly committed the gang-rape.
Police sources said the accused attempted to silence the survivor by offering her ₹5,000. She later submitted a written statement to the college authorities detailing the ordeal. Her male companion has also been detained for questioning, as investigators probe his suspicious conduct that night, including why he fled the scene without seeking help.
The first three accused were produced before the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court on Sunday and remanded to 10 days of police custody. Meanwhile, search operations continue to identify others who may have participated in or had knowledge of the crime.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also oversees the home department, condemned the incident and vowed strict action, asserting that “none of the accused will be spared.” She further directed authorities to review security measures at private medical colleges across the state.
Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) chairperson Sovana Mohanty visited Durgapur to meet the survivor, her family, and local police officials. Earlier, an Odisha government delegation was reportedly denied hospital access to meet the student, who remains under medical observation while receiving treatment.
