Trump Slams Putin as “Absolutely Crazy” Amid Intensified Russian Strikes on Ukraine

National Times Bureau, May 26, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump has launched one of his harshest criticisms yet against Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “absolutely crazy” in the wake of a devastating escalation in Russia’s war on Ukraine. The comments came as Russia unleashed its most extensive drone and missile assault since the war began, killing at least 12 civilians and injuring many more over three days of sustained bombardment.

Trump, posting on social media, said Putin was “needlessly killing a lot of people” and warned that trying to take over all of Ukraine would ultimately “lead to the downfall of Russia.” His statement marks a rare and sharp denunciation of the Russian leader, especially considering past accusations of Trump’s conciliatory stance toward the Kremlin.

However, the American president didn’t spare Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy either. He accused Zelenskyy of “stirring up the situation,” suggesting that his defiant tone in the face of Russian aggression could be exacerbating the crisis.

The Kremlin responded by brushing off Trump’s remarks. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov attributed the outburst to an “emotional overload,” defending Putin’s actions as part of a broader effort to ensure Russia’s national security.

In the aftermath of the strikes, the United States, along with the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, decided to lift range restrictions on weapons being supplied to Ukraine. This move allows Ukraine to use long-range cruise missiles to strike Russian targets up to 200 miles away—a significant development in the military dynamic of the conflict.

Tensions remain high as diplomatic efforts have yielded little progress. Trump and Putin had held direct talks earlier this year, but those discussions failed to ease hostilities. Now, as the war enters a new and deadlier phase, Trump’s statements reflect growing frustration and a shift in rhetoric as civilian casualties mount and Western involvement deepens.
