New York (National Times): Former U.S. President Donald Trump has lashed out at Zohran Mamdani, the Indian-origin leftist who recently clinched the Democratic primary for New York City’s mayoral race, calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” in a fiery post on his Truth Social platform.
Trump’s comments came after Mamdani, a self-proclaimed socialist, defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a surprising upset that has energized the city’s progressive base. With 43.5% of the vote and 90% ballots counted, Mamdani is now poised to become the first Muslim mayor of New York City—if he wins the general election.
“This is beyond radical. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary and could become Mayor. We’ve had Left-wing crazies before, but this is absurd,” Trump wrote, adding that Mamdani “looks terrible,” has a “grating voice,” and is “not very smart.”
Trump also took jabs at progressive figures backing Mamdani, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, sarcastically calling the group “AOC+3” and mocking Schumer as “our Great Palestinian Senator.”
In another tongue-in-cheek post, Trump suggested the Democrats should nominate “low IQ candidate Jasmine Crockett” for president and appoint “AOC+3” to key Cabinet positions, mocking the party’s shift toward the progressive wing.
Zohran Mamdani, 33, currently serves in the New York State Assembly, representing Queens. He is the son of acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-born Marxist academic Mahmood Mamdani. He is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and has drawn both praise and criticism for his outspoken support for Palestinian rights, even accusing Israel of “genocide.”
Mamdani’s campaign has resonated with working-class voters, particularly with policies like rent freezes, universal childcare, and free bus transportation—issues that strike a chord in a city plagued by high costs of living.
While his win signals a surge in grassroots progressive energy, it has also triggered alarm among establishment Democrats and conservatives alike. Many see his rise as a sign of deepening ideological divides within the Democratic Party as it grapples with its identity ahead of the 2026 national elections.
