Trump Reignites Debate at G7 Summit, Calls for Russia’s Return to the Group

Alberta, Canada — U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred diplomatic waters by repeating his long-standing demand to reinstate Russia into the G7, transforming it back into the G8. Speaking during the opening sessions of the G7 Summit in Alberta, Trump argued that excluding Russia was “counterproductive” and said the global stage needed Moscow “at the table, not outside the door.”

This is the third consecutive G7 summit where Trump has advocated for Russia’s return, calling the current format “outdated and hypocritical.” According to sources present at the closed-door meeting, Trump insisted that Russia’s voice was essential for any meaningful progress on global security, energy policy, and economic stability particularly in light of rising conflicts in Eastern Europe and West Asia.

Russia was expelled from the then-G8 in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. While some Western leaders remain firmly against normalizing relations with Moscow, Trump’s latest remarks signal a continued divide among major powers on how to engage with Vladimir Putin’s government amid ongoing international sanctions.

Reactions from other leaders were mixed. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau diplomatically sidestepped Trump’s comments, while French President Emmanuel Macron was reportedly “firm” in opposition to any reintegration without “clear de-escalation” from Russia on multiple fronts.

As the summit continues, Trump’s call is expected to dominate behind-the-scenes diplomacy, even as the agenda officially remains focused on trade tensions, supply chains, and escalating Middle East conflicts.
