Trump Praises India for Reducing Russian Oil Imports, Calls New Delhi “Very Good” on Energy Cooperation

Washington, October 30: US President Donald Trump on Thursday lauded India’s approach to reducing oil imports from Russia, describing New Delhi as “very good” in addressing Washington’s concerns over Moscow’s energy trade. His remarks come amid heightened global scrutiny of nations maintaining commercial ties with Russia following the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, Trump said, “Xi has been buying oil from Russia for a long time. It takes care of a big part of China. And, you know, I can say India’s been very good on that front. But we didn’t really discuss the oil. We discussed working together to see if we could get that war finished.”

Trump reiterated that India had assured his administration of significantly reducing its dependence on Russian oil. Last week, he claimed New Delhi would cut its purchases to “almost nothing” by the end of the year, signaling strong cooperation between the two democracies on strategic energy alignment.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that its energy decisions prioritize national interests and consumer protection amid a volatile global market. “Our import policies are guided by the objective of ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies. This includes broad-basing and diversifying our energy sourcing as appropriate to meet market conditions,” the MEA stated earlier.

The ministry also highlighted India’s growing energy partnership with the United States, noting that both countries have expanded cooperation across the oil, gas, and renewable sectors over the past decade. Talks are continuing to further strengthen strategic energy ties in line with mutual economic and security interests.
