Trump Expresses Caution Over Russia’s Motives After Meeting Zelenskyy at Pope Francis’ Funeral

Vatican City, April 27, 2025 – US President Donald Trump, after an important meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the funeral of Pope Francis, voiced strong concerns over Russia’s real intentions in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The two leaders held a brief but significant conversation at St. Peter’s Basilica, marking their first direct engagement since Trump’s re-election. Speaking to reporters afterward, President Trump said he remained “extremely wary” of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions, especially following recent escalations targeting Ukrainian civilians.

“If Russia truly desired peace, their behavior would reflect it. Their continued aggression shows otherwise,” Trump stated firmly. He emphasized that the United States would not hesitate to impose tougher measures against Moscow if necessary, reinforcing his administration’s tough stance on protecting international law and sovereignty.

President Zelenskyy described the meeting as “critical and hopeful,” calling for stronger global support to help Ukraine defend itself and restore peace. Zelenskyy also engaged with several European leaders during the funeral, including Estonian President Alar Karis and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in an effort to rally continued diplomatic and humanitarian support.

The funeral of Pope Francis, remembered worldwide for his tireless efforts in promoting peace and advocating for the rights of displaced children especially from Ukraine became a backdrop for serious diplomatic discussions amid global mourning.

President Trump’s firm position against Russian actions signals that US foreign policy under his leadership will maintain a hard line, especially as Ukraine’s future remains central to international security conversations.
