Washington, September 2, 2025 – Former US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has accused President Donald Trump of sacrificing America’s relationship with India for personal business interests linked to Pakistan, calling it a “huge strategic harm” to US foreign policy.
Speaking on the MeidasTouch network, Sullivan said the US-India partnership had been nurtured for decades across party lines, with progress in technology, economics, and security cooperation, especially against the backdrop of China’s growing influence. However, he claimed that progress had been undermined under Trump’s leadership.
“In no small part, because of Pakistan’s willingness to do business deals with the Trump family, Trump has thrown the India relationship over the side,” Sullivan said, warning that weakening ties with India runs counter to US national interests.
Sullivan, who served in the Biden administration, said such actions raised doubts about America’s reliability among allies worldwide. “If you are Germany, Japan, or Canada, you look at that and say, ‘that could be us tomorrow.’ That only reinforces the view that countries need to hedge against the United States,” he said.
According to Sullivan, the fallout extends beyond India, shaking trust in US commitments globally. “Our word should be our bond. We should be good for what we say. Our friends should be able to rely on us,” he added.
Sullivan warned that the weakening of trust not only carries immediate consequences for India-US ties but also has a reverberating impact on Washington’s global partnerships.
