Trump Confirms Trade Deal with China, Awaits Final Nod from Xi

Washington DC, June 11, 2025: US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States has reached a trade deal with China following two days of high-level talks in London. He stated the agreement now awaits final approval from both him and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump made the declaration on Truth Social, highlighting key provisions of the deal. According to his post, China has agreed to supply “full magnets, and any necessary rare earths” to the US, while Washington will permit Chinese students to continue studying at American colleges and universities.

“Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,” Trump wrote. He described the ongoing relationship with China as “excellent,” adding, “We are getting a total of 55% tariffs, China is getting 10%.”

The development marks a breakthrough in bilateral relations, coming just weeks after both sides initiated a 90-day pause on most tariffs during a previous round of negotiations in Geneva. The recent framework emerged after a 90-minute phone call last week between Trump and Xi.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the framework is set to advance once both presidents provide final approval. Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang described the discussions as “professional, rational, in-depth and candid.”

“The two sides will bring back and report to our respective leaders the talks in the meeting as well as the framework that was reached in principle,” Li told reporters. He added that the progress made in London is expected to boost trust between the two global powers.

This agreement also comes amid prior warnings from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had signaled restrictions on Chinese student visas, particularly those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or sensitive academic fields. Trump’s recent statement, however, affirmed the US commitment to allowing Chinese students access to American educational institutions, calling it “always good with me!”

The trade deal, if approved, is likely to shape the future course of US-China relations, particularly in the areas of technology, academia, and mineral supply chains critical to global manufacturing.
