Trump Calls Modi a ‘Tougher Negotiator,’ Announces Major US-India Agreements

Washington, DC, February 14, 2025– US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “much tougher negotiator” during a joint press conference on Thursday. He emphasized that there was “not even a contest” when asked who among them was more skilled in negotiations.

Strengthening Trade Ties Through IMEC

Trump announced that India and the US will collaborate on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). He called it one of the greatest trade routes in history. The corridor will connect India to Israel, Italy, and the US, linking key regions through roads, railways, and undersea cables.

“This is a big development,” Trump said. “A lot of money will be spent to keep this project advanced and ensure we remain leaders.” He added that the friendship between the US and India is now stronger than ever.

IMEC will consist of an Eastern Corridor linking India to the Gulf region and a Northern Corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe. The initiative, launched during the G20 Summit in 2023, involves India, the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, the European Union, Italy, France, and Germany.

Boosting Military and Security Cooperation

In a significant defense announcement, Trump confirmed that the US will increase military sales to India. He also revealed plans to provide India with F-35 Stealth fighters.

“Starting this year, we will increase military sales to India by many billions of dollars,” Trump stated. He reaffirmed US commitment to the Quad partnership, which includes India, Australia, and Japan, aiming to maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific.

Energy and Trade Agreements

Trump also highlighted agreements on energy imports and trade routes. The US will expand its role as a key oil and natural gas supplier to India.

“We have reached an important agreement that will make the US, hopefully, the number one energy supplier to India,” Trump said. He noted that India is reforming laws to welcome US nuclear technology, marking a breakthrough for the American nuclear industry.

With these developments, the US and India continue to deepen their economic, military, and strategic ties, reinforcing a strong partnership for the future.
