Amritsar, May 12, 2025 — In a tragic incident in Majitha, Amritsar, several lives were lost due to spurious liquor consumption, prompting swift and decisive action by the Punjab Police.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of nine individuals, including the kingpin of the racket and multiple local distributors. Preliminary investigation has revealed that methanol, a toxic industrial chemical, was procured online and used in the manufacture of the illicit liquor. Police have launched a thorough probe to uncover the entire supply chain and modus operandi of the illegal operation.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Excise Act. In a strong disciplinary move, the DSP of Majitha Subdivision and the SHO of Majitha Police Station have been suspended for gross negligence. Departmental inquiries have also been initiated against other delinquent officials.
The Punjab Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward illicit liquor trade and affirmed its commitment to bring all culprits to justice. “We stand united in grief and in our resolve to prevent such tragedies in the future,” the force stated.
