Tragedy in Brazil: 8 Dead, 13 Injured After Hot Air Balloon Catches Fire and Crashes

Santa Catarina (Brazil) – At least eight people lost their lives and thirteen others were seriously injured after a hot air balloon caught fire mid-air and plummeted to the ground in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina on Friday morning.

The tragic incident occurred near the municipality of Pindamonhangaba during what was reportedly a private ballooning event. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the balloon burst into flames shortly after takeoff, sending passengers screaming before it crashed into a nearby field.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but officials confirmed that six people died on the spot while two others succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Thirteen passengers are currently receiving treatment for severe burns and fractures, with some in critical condition.

Initial investigations suggest that a gas leak may have caused the fire, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a technical malfunction or human error. Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority has launched a full inquiry into the incident and grounded similar hot air balloon operations nationwide as a precaution.

Local media reported that the balloon was carrying 21 individuals, exceeding the typical capacity for such aircraft. Authorities are verifying whether proper safety regulations were followed by the private operator.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and promised a thorough investigation. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We will ensure accountability and support for the injured and bereaved,” he said in a statement.

The disaster has reignited concerns over ballooning safety in Brazil, a popular activity among tourists and thrill-seekers, especially in the scenic highlands of Santa Catarina.
