Sikkim, June 3, 2025 — Tragedy struck a remote Indian Army station in Sikkim on Tuesday morning when a massive landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, buried portions of the facility, killing three soldiers and leaving six personnel missing, including a Lieutenant Colonel.
According to official sources, the landslide hit the 11th Mile area near the Chungthang sub-division in north Sikkim around 6:15 am. Rescue operations are underway with the assistance of local authorities, the Army’s own teams, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel. So far, three bodies have been recovered, while search operations for the missing continue despite the challenging terrain and continuous rain.
The incident has drawn attention to the increasing frequency of climate-induced disasters in the Himalayan region. Sikkim, still reeling from past flash floods and road blockages, has faced heavy monsoon rainfall over the past week, which has destabilized mountain slopes and raised landslide risks across several districts.
The Indian Army has cordoned off the affected zone and deployed engineering teams to aid in clearing debris. Senior officers are monitoring the situation closely, and the families of the missing personnel have been notified.
