Mumbai/New Delhi, July 12, 2025 — Global electric vehicle giant Tesla is preparing to make its official foray into the Indian market next week, with the grand opening of its first experience centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.
The highly anticipated launch event, scheduled for July 15, has been branded as the “launch of Tesla in India,” according to exclusive invitations circulated by the Elon Musk-led firm. Tesla has not issued any official statement in response to media queries about the launch.
Industry insiders say the company has already imported its first fleet of vehicles, reportedly the Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, from its manufacturing facility in China. The move signals Tesla’s strategy to test Indian demand and brand positioning before committing to larger investments.
However, Tesla’s India debut unfolds against a backdrop of diplomatic and trade tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized the idea of Tesla building a factory in India as a way to bypass high tariffs, calling it “unfair” to American interests.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously cited heavy operational obligations as the reason for delaying his India visit in April last year. The company had been seeking significant tariff concessions a 70% reduction on vehicles under $40,000 and a 100% waiver on pricier models to make its cars more affordable in the Indian market.
But Indian policymakers have signaled little appetite for special treatment. Earlier this year, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal asserted that India would not frame policies to favor any single company, emphasizing instead a level playing field designed to attract all global electric vehicle manufacturers.
“The government recognises the importance of building a vibrant EV ecosystem, which can help cut carbon emissions and reduce the oil import bill,” Goyal said. “But it will not tailor policies for just one firm.”
As Tesla prepares to roll out its brand in the world’s fastest-growing large economy, it faces both enormous market potential and regulatory hurdles. Indian consumers, increasingly interested in premium EVs, will now watch closely to see how the automaker navigates policy complexities and price sensitivities in the months ahead.
