Teen Charged After Random Knife Attack in Downtown Winnipeg

Winnipeg, February 2, 2026 — An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a random knife attack that left a passerby injured in downtown Winnipeg, police said.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers received multiple emergency calls around 5:30 p.m. on Friday reporting a disturbance in the 300 block of Portage Avenue. Callers told police that a young man armed with a knife had entered a building and was behaving aggressively.

Police said the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly knocked another man to the ground. During the struggle, the victim managed to disarm the attacker, while several bystanders intervened and restrained the suspect until officers arrived at the scene.

When police reached the location, they found the suspect uncooperative and continuing to act violently. Officers used a Taser to subdue him and took him into custody. A knife was later recovered from the scene.

The 18-year-old has been charged with weapon-related offences and was released on an undertaking, police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries and received treatment from paramedics at the scene. Police noted that all allegations remain unproven and have not yet been tested in court.
