Taslima Nasreen Calls for Democracy and Secularism in Bangladesh

March 3, 2025 – Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has criticized the political situation in Bangladesh, stating that the country is suffering from a lack of democracy and freedom of expression. She urged for political change to restore democratic values and secularism.

Call for Political Change

Nasreen asserted that Bangladesh is currently devoid of democracy, making it crucial to bring about political reforms. She warned of the risks posed by extremist elements, stating, “There is no democracy there. So we want democracy… There should be change in Bangladesh, political changes are needed.”

She expressed concerns about the growing influence of Islamist extremists, stating that without democracy, freedom of expression is impossible. She added that individuals who speak against religious fanatics or government authorities face persecution, imprisonment, or even death.

Need for Secularism and Women’s Rights

Highlighting the significance of secularism, Nasreen said, “If there is no secularism, then women will suffer. There will be religious laws, and under religious laws, women will not get any equality.” She also pointed out that religious minorities would face oppression if democracy and secularism are not restored in the country.

Support for Religious Freedom

Despite being a critic of religious extremism, Nasreen emphasized her belief in people’s right to practice their faith. She remarked, “Muslims go to Kaaba, Christians go to Jerusalem, Hindus go to Mahakumbh… I believe in secularism, so I think that every person has the right to practice their religion. Personally, I don’t practice religion, but I believe in other people’s right to practice religion.”

Concerns Over Religious Extremism

However, she warned that Islamist extremists do not share the same tolerance, saying, “They do not want our right to not practice religion. They want to kill us. If we say anything against religious fanaticism, they come to kill us.” She concluded by stressing the importance of freedom of expression for all, including those with opposing views.
