Murshidabad (West Bengal), December 6, 2025— Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a mosque modeled on the design of Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid at Rejinagar in Murshidabad district. The ceremony drew thousands of onlookers and unfolded under an extensive security blanket.
Kabir, joined by several clerics, inaugurated the event by cutting a ceremonial ribbon as chants of “Nara-e-Takbeer, Allahu Akbar” resonated across the area. People had begun assembling since early morning, turning the venue into a major crowd hotspot.
Given the sensitivity surrounding the event, the administration deployed heavy security across Rejinagar and nearby Beldanga. Personnel from the state police, Rapid Action Force, and central forces were stationed to ensure peace, while senior officers supervised the situation throughout the day.
Kabir’s involvement has stirred political controversy. He was suspended from the Trinamool Congress earlier this week after being accused of fuelling communal tensions. His decision to proceed with the foundation ceremony triggered sharp reactions, prompting the authorities to stay on high alert.
The date of the event — December 6 — added further significance, as it marks the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya, a day often associated with heightened sensitivities.
