Surrey Shooting Linked to Ongoing Extortion Investigation Raises Community Concerns

Surrey (Rajeev Sharma): Police is investigating an early morning shooting in Surrey, which they believe is connected to an ongoing extortion case, thereby fueling growing concerns about public safety in the region. Police say the shooting happened around 3:50 a.m., when officers responded to reports in the 14300 block of 28 Avenue, in a tree-lined neighbourhood of multimillion-dollar homes on large lots. Officers responded promptly after receiving reports of gunfire. Although no injuries were confirmed, investigators have stated that the case is directly linked to an active extortion investigation.

This shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland that police have tied to extortion networks. In recent months, several local businesses and community members have reported receiving threats demanding money, accompanied by warnings of violence if payments were not made. In some cases, intimidation has escalated into property damage, arson, and now gun violence. Law enforcement agencies believe these extortion rings are organized and may have ties beyond Surrey, extending across Metro Vancouver and even internationally.

Surrey RCMP has confirmed that they are canvassing the area, speaking to witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that community cooperation is crucial to breaking the cycle of threats and violence. “Extortion is a serious crime that impacts not just the immediate victims but the entire community,” police said in a statement. “Our priority is ensuring public safety and holding those responsible accountable.”

Local residents have stated that the increase in shootings and extortion-linked crimes has shaken their sense of security. Many small business owners in Surrey’s South Asian community have raised concerns about being targeted, saying they live in fear of retaliation if they speak out. Community leaders have called on all levels of government and law enforcement to take urgent steps to combat extortion-related crime, including allocating more police resources, conducting community outreach, and providing stronger protection for victims. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released information on suspects or arrests at this time. Police are encouraging anyone with video footage or tips related to the 3:50 a.m. shooting to contact Surrey RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
As Surrey continues to grapple with rising incidents linked to extortion, community members have stated that restoring public confidence will require both accountability and proactive action from law enforcement.
