New Delhi, August 11, 2025: Team Asia, captained by India’s Suraj Narredu popularly known as the “Magic Man of India” has lifted the prestigious Shergar Cup 2025 trophy at Ascot Racecourse, narrowly edging out Europe by a single point.
Competing alongside Japanese jockeys Ryusei Sakai and Mirai Iwata, Narredu’s team claimed victory in two of six races and secured a crucial second-place finish to seal a 68-67 win over Europe. Great Britain & Ireland finished third with 62 points, while the Rest of the World scored 55. Hugh Bowman earned the Silver Saddle as the event’s top jockey.
Riding Dylan Cunha-trained Fireblade, Narredu won the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Shergar Cup Stayers, controlling the two-mile race from an early move and holding his lead by nearly two lengths. Sakai triumphed aboard Prince of India in the Shergar Cup Sprint, further strengthening Asia’s tally. The celebrations took place in the presence of Dubai Duty Free Deputy MD Salah Tahlak and Senior VP of Marketing Sinead El Sibai.
“It’s been a dream come true,” Narredu said. “I always imagined this moment, but living it feels surreal. Winning as a debut team makes it even more special. I’m proud to take this win back to my country.” With over 2,400 career wins, Narredu continues a rich family legacy in horse racing, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle.
Marking the occasion, the 40-year-old executed his first-ever signature flying dismount, paying tribute to idol Frankie Dettori and thrilling the Ascot crowd.
