New Delhi, December 16, 2025: The Supreme Court on Wednesday transferred the suo motu proceedings related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College to the Calcutta High Court, directing it to oversee further compliance with the apex court’s earlier orders in the matter.
A Bench headed by Justice M.M. Sundresh ordered that all case records be forwarded to the Calcutta High Court, which will now monitor the implementation of directions issued by the Supreme Court during its earlier hearings. The Bench also directed that a copy of the latest status report be provided to the parents of the victim.
The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case in 2024 after the body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the crime the following day.
On January 20 this year, a Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death. The case had sparked widespread public outrage and sustained protests across West Bengal, with demands for justice and improved safety measures for medical professionals.
Despite the completion of the trial, the Supreme Court continued to monitor several related issues arising from the incident, including concerns over the unauthorised absence of doctors during protests and systemic lapses in hospital safety.
In the aftermath of the crime, the apex court had also constituted a National Task Force on August 20 last year to formulate a comprehensive protocol to ensure the safety and security of doctors and healthcare workers across the country.
