Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Actress Twisha Sharma’s Death; Husband Remanded, Delhi AIIMS to Re-Conduct Autopsy

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the highly publicised death of actress Twisha Sharma, the daughter-in-law of a retired judge, whose body was discovered under highly suspicious circumstances at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills on May 12, 2026. A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India is scheduled to convene an emergency hearing on the matter on Monday. The apex court’s direct intervention comes amidst mounting allegations of administrative collusion and institutional pressure within the local police apparatus. Concurrently, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has formally extended state consent to hand over the entire investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure an uncompromised probe.

In a significant judicial development on Saturday, the Bhopal District Court remanded Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, to seven days of police custody and ordered the immediate impounding of his passport to prevent any flight risk. Samarth, a practicing advocate whose license was suspended with immediate effect by Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra following his evasion of law enforcement, surrendered at the Jabalpur District Court on Friday after altering his physical appearance to evade recognition. Twisha’s brother-in-law, Saurabh Sharma, publicly labeled the surrender as a heavily scripted theatrical layout, questioning how the suspect traveled undetected by road from Bhopal to Jabalpur despite active lookout notices, only to be detained after private family lawyers spotted him wearing a surgical mask inside the courtroom.

To eliminate discrepancies over the cause of death, which the in-laws termed a suicide while the maternal family alleges a premeditated murder, a high-tech four-member forensic team from AIIMS Delhi arrived in Bhopal with advanced equipment to execute a second, independent post-mortem examination on Sunday. Investigators also recovered vital pre-incident evidence, including a security camera feed from a beauty parlor situated 100 meters away from the residence, showing Twisha completely relaxed and normal just hours before her death. Furthermore, digital forensics revealed that at 9:52 AM on May 12, Twisha had booked a confirmed reservation on the Bhopal-Jaipur Express to visit her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, in Ajmer on May 15, directly contradicting the theory that she was suffering from chronic suicidal ideation.

The legal battle has intensified with family attorney Ankur Sharma filing a formal petition with the Police Commissioner to remove the Katara Hills Station House Officer and specific members of the Special Investigation Team, alleging documented call logs show police personnel maintained regular contact with the accused party during their period of evasion. Tensions boiled over outside the family residence when the suspect’s mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, left the premises under heavy legal escort; her defense counsel, Gyanendra Sharma, actively blocked journalists and sustained a foot injury under the wheel of her departing vehicle while accusing the media of instigating a public trial. The high-profile union between Twisha and Samarth had originated via a matrimonial portal in January 2025, culminating in a wedding in Delhi on December 9, 2025, before terminating in tragedy just five months later following what the maternal family describes as persistent caste-centered humiliation and domestic harassment.
