New Delhi, May 31, 2025: The Supreme Court of India has returned to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges with the swearing-in of Justices N V Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and A S Chandurkar. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud at the Supreme Court premises.
This development marks the highest bench strength the apex court has held since the retirement of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Abhay S Oka, and Hrishikesh Roy earlier this year. The fresh appointments follow the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations issued on May 25, 2025, which were swiftly approved by the Union government.
Justice N V Anjaria, formerly Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, is widely respected for his judicial contributions and case disposal record. Justice Vijay Bishnoi, who previously served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, brings crucial representation from the North-East. Justice A S Chandurkar, from the Bombay High Court, has a reputation for incisive judgments on constitutional and administrative matters.
Justice Chandurkar is also known for his legal scholarship and authorship of texts on municipal and rent control laws. His notable rulings include upholding institutional dress codes and striking down certain provisions of the amended IT Rules as unconstitutional.
With these appointments, the Supreme Court is now better positioned to expedite pending cases and strengthen judicial efficiency. Legal analysts note that maintaining the Court’s full strength is essential to address the country’s growing docket of legal matters, especially concerning constitutional challenges and national interest litigations.
