New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Supreme Court of India received a significant boost on Monday with the appointment of five senior judges from various High Courts across the country. The Union Law Ministry issued formal notifications confirming their elevation to the apex court, paving the way for a stronger judicial bench at a time when courts continue to deal with a large volume of pending cases.
Among the judges elevated is Justice Sheel Nagu, who currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His appointment is being seen as an important moment for the region’s legal community, given his extensive experience in constitutional, civil and administrative matters.
The newly appointed judges also include Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and Justice Venkata Subramani Mohana.
The appointments follow the established process of judicial elevations and are expected to enhance the Supreme Court’s ability to handle a broad spectrum of legal disputes, including constitutional questions, appeals and matters of national significance.
Justice Sheel Nagu’s elevation is particularly notable for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, where he earned recognition for his judicial work after taking charge of one of the country’s busiest High Courts. His tenure witnessed the hearing of several high-profile cases involving governance, public policy and citizens’ rights.
Legal experts believe the inclusion of judges with diverse experience from different High Courts will strengthen the Supreme Court’s institutional capacity and bring varied perspectives to its deliberations.
With the latest appointments now formally notified, the five judges are expected to assume office in the coming days, adding fresh strength to the country’s highest court and contributing to the administration of justice at the national level.
