New Delhi, December 18, 2025: The Supreme Court collegium on Thursday recommended the elevation of five judges as Chief Justices of different High Courts across the country, according to sources familiar with the decision.
The collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, took the decision during a meeting held earlier in the day. The recommendations have been forwarded to the Centre for further action.
Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of the Allahabad High Court has been recommended for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice on January 9.
Justice Revati P. Mohite Dere of the Bombay High Court has been proposed for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. In another recommendation from the same court, Justice M.S. Sonak has been cleared for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court after the current incumbent retires on January 8.
The collegium has also recommended Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court has been proposed as the next Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
In addition to these elevations, the collegium has recommended the transfer of the incumbent Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court to take over as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court after the retirement of the present Chief Justice on January 9.
The appointments are expected to be formalised after approval by the Union government.
