Sudden Weather Shift Cools Delhi-NCR as Storms Replace Heatwave Conditions

Heavy Showers Lash Parts of Punjab, Sutlej River Swells Again; Farmers Fear Flooding Threat

Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): A spell of rain and dust-laden winds brought much-needed respite to Delhi-NCR on Wednesday, ending days of extreme heat that had pushed temperatures to uncomfortable highs.

The change began in the early hours, when strong winds and dark clouds swept across New Delhi and surrounding areas, followed by light to moderate showers. The sudden weather activity led to a drop in daytime temperatures, which are now expected to remain below earlier projections.

The India Meteorological Department attributed the development to a western disturbance affecting northern parts of the country. This system has triggered thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the region, disrupting the prevailing heatwave conditions.

Meteorologists have forecast more rain and thunderstorm activity throughout the day, with wind speeds likely to range between 30 and 40 km/h. Similar weather patterns are expected in neighbouring states, including parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

While the rainfall has provided temporary relief, officials noted that fluctuating weather conditions may continue over the next few days. Residents have been advised to remain alert during periods of strong winds and lightning.

Meanwhile, data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed that air quality levels in the capital remained in the ‘poor’ category, despite the change in weather.
