Udalguri (Assam): A powerful earthquake of 5.8 magnitude struck the northeast on Sunday evening, triggering panic across several states.
The quake, recorded at 4.41 pm, had its epicentre in Udalguri district of Assam and a depth of 5 km, officials confirmed.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X that there were no reports of major damage or casualties so far. “The epicentre was near Udalguri. We are actively monitoring the situation,” he wrote.
Tremors were strongly felt in Udalguri, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Nalbari and Guwahati, where panic-stricken residents rushed out of their homes. People in parts of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, including capital Itanagar, also felt the jolts and were seen leaving their houses and shops in fear.
Arunachal Pradesh Disaster Management Secretary Dani Sulu said no structural damage or casualties had been reported in the state. “The situation is being closely monitored, but there is no cause for alarm,” he added.
The northeast region, which falls in a high seismic zone, is prone to frequent earthquakes.
